Step-by-Step Elopement Planning Timeline: What to Do 12 Months, 6 Months, 3 Months, and 1 Month Out
So you’ve decided to elope!! Cue the confetti! Choosing an elopement means you’re ready to ditch the stress of a big wedding and focus on what really matters: the two of you, an epic adventure, and a day that feels true to your story. But even though elopements are more relaxed, having a timeline to follow can make the planning process smooth and stress-free. Remember, as photographer and your elopement planner, we’re always here to help!
We’ve put together a step-by-step elopement planning timeline so you know exactly what to focus on at each stage of the journey.
12 Months Out:
Dream & Decide
At this stage, it’s all about big-picture dreaming.
Choose your elopement location (think Yosemite, the Eastern Sierras, Alaska, or the PNW … wherever your hearts feel most alive).
Hire your elopement photographer (hey, that’s us!) who can also help guide you with planning, permits, and vendor recommendations.
Research any necessary permits for your location (check the official National Park Service website for park-specific requirements). We can help with this important step!
Start talking about what you want your day to look like … just the two of you, a small group of loved ones, a sunrise hike, or an epic stargazing sendoff.
6 Months Out:
Lock in the Details
By now, your vision is starting to come together.
Book your travel and accommodations. If you’re eloping in a popular location like Yosemite or Alaska, lodging fills fast.
Schedule your first planning session with your photographer so you can start mapping out the details together. Also now is the time to create a rough timeline to make sure you have the right lighting for portraits, vows, and adventure time.
Finalize your officiant and any other vendors (hair & makeup, florals, or an adventure guide if you’re planning something unique).
Start shopping for elopement attire that fits the vibe: flowy dresses for mountain breezes, hiking boots that can take on trails, or chic jackets for chilly evenings.
3 Months Out:
Fine-Tune & Prep
Now it’s time to pull those dreamy ideas into a plan you can almost see and feel.
Secure permits (most national and state parks require these well in advance).
Make an appointment to get your marriage license (either in your home state or in California).
Arrange gear or rentals—whether it’s hiking poles, a bouquet, or a Jeep to get to those backroads.
Send out any announcements or invitations if you’re having guests.
Write your vows or start sketching ideas for how you want the ceremony to flow.
If necessary, schedule another planning session with your photographer to hash out more details and ensure you have all the proper permit and licenses.
1 Month Out:
Get Ready to Elope!
You’re almost there! This is when everything becomes real.
Pack your bags and double-check essentials (marriage license requirements, rings, vow books, hiking snacks, warm layers).
Break in your boots or any new attire so you’re comfortable on the big day.
Confirm travel details, vendor times, and meeting spots.
Create a “day-of” emergency kit: think bobby pins, first aid, granola bars, and champagne.
Schedule a final planning session with your photographer to review the vision, finalize your elopement timeline, and answer all your last-minute questions.
Most importantly, take a breath—you’ve got this, and it’s going to be unforgettable.
Elopement Day:
Soak It All In
When the day finally arrives, let go of stress and fully embrace the adventure. The beauty of eloping is that it’s all about you two. Whether you’re hiking to a glacier, saying your vows under towering pines, or celebrating with family under desert stars, it’s YOUR day to remember forever.
